CHARITY ART GALA

This month is so busy. You can tell people are gearing up for the holidays it seems every other day there is an event, show, holiday market I can’t keep up with everything when there are so many!! Im forgetting things left and right and need to learn to actually put things on my phone!

So heres an exciting thing! Some of my work is featured in this thank you video from Peorias RonaldMcdonald House charity event where $200,000 was raised to help complete construction and pay artists!
my work is at :24 and 1:03

However despite all the busy, I did make it to the Art Gala (please read that in a fancy voice!) An event ment to raise money to fund the Ronald McDonald House and to purchase local art to decorate the rooms and common areas of the building.

Im honored I was able to participate since I have had friends who have needed their services and being able to provide art for folks who may be in a crisis time of life to make their stay a little more uplifting. Tonights event was at the Scottish Rite Cathedral next to the RMH.

Of the pieces I submitted 3 were accepted for the charity auction

Penelopy the Purple Flying Elephant is a magical elephant who is a character in a story I’ve been working for so long she is older than some collage grads…
Unihare is part of a series where I put a unicorn horn on all sorts of things.
This caffeinated painting titled “Fishing” was originally painted with coffee and this wide eyed awake fish is hooked!

It was an interesting night as I have never been to an event quite like this. The more I talked to some of the other artists there neither had they so it was a new experience for most of us.

Look a giant name badge!
Sharing my work with some people
This was the auctioneer, his jacket was amazingly extra and I loved it
Doug and Eileen who make so many amazing art things happen in Peoria. And Raphael Rodolphi in his natural habitat taking some amazing video!
Im sorry I’m weird Heather!
These ladies were good company! Sherri is always so friendly. Adrienne made my night and was so encouraging on all things!
Good to see Stacy again I first met her at the Buisness of Art she paints beautiful doggos!
I met Peggy (? I hope thats right?) For the first time at the Gala, she had such a warm spirit she had some acryic pour pieces in the auction.

Before the Auction I went to check out everyones work at the Peoria Library for the CIAO Womens show

I had 3 pieces I almost missed participating because I need to be better at organizing my calanders!
This piece is by Billie Howd, I love this and wish it was in my livingroom!
This piece is by Heather Royer Mileur I snapped this picture before her and Kevin stopped in and thats when she showed me it has a hood and an awesome dragonfly on the back!! I love anything with a hood!
I dont thinks Ive met Pam but I really liked this piece!

That was a busy beautiful day and even if I didnt get to be everywhere with everyone for all the things going on that day know you are dearly loved!

Beginning of Authenticity

I have recently started a series based on the idea of authenticity. An idea I had been playing with a lot more latley. It can be so difficult for us to be authentic with others, and even at times with ourselves. That we are slow or even fail to create things and ideas of value.

Authenticity often requires a person to be accepting of their own self. Being comfortable in ones own skin enough that you can share that person with others. After times of isolation it is especially hard to be authentic! Sometimes all it takes is a little encouragment/kind words from an old friend to remind you of what you are capable of and that your thoughts are valid!

As I continue to work on the sketches for this series I have been doing a lot of self discovery and introspection and in doing so have found some better footing in my work. A hopeful grounding for future shows and individual pieces.

This is some of the progress of my first painting in the series. Which at the time of this post is on display at the Studios on Sheridan. A great Gallery at the corner of Main and Sheridan in Peoria,IL. They are currently hosting an exhibit called HOT CIAO so many great pieces in this show that is is definatly worth the stop to visit and see some of the things people are working on! The exihibit runs throughout September with a closing reception 6-8pm on Sept 28th.

Artist grants and Where to find Creative Support for 2020

Latley I’ve been attempting to write grant proposals and refine my artist statment to help fund my lofty ideas of creating a large body of work. I find it incredibly anxiety inducing trying to write a letter boasting my ability and goals!

Often as artists it’s easy to fall into the trap of seeing yourself as just another cog in the creative wheel. Especially on the internet where content is driven by peoples creativity it can be hard to stand out and still keep the machine moving.

I often fall into a way of thinking that there is nothing new under the sun. People have been painting for centuries, and even our own dna is just carbon copys of our ancestors so even original referance art isnt ‘original’ but that critical art brain leads to apathy. Today I’m ditching the insecure artist cliche’ and focusing on my strengths. You should too because people want OC (original content) and only creatives can provide that.

Thankfully, there are a lot of organizations that offer art grants and fellowships that support artists in creating work, and free us up to concentrate on creating.

A year in Review

Killing apathy

I always try to self evaluate every year and this year was no different. I evaluate my heart and find some goals not reached and my spiritual growth to have been slow. Its hard to admit, my life as thus far in my early 30s seems to have come in what seems just inches at a time, when I want so much more. I look back at the past 365 days and wonder what could have been if I had not wasted those precious minutes, but I look forward to the future for I know the end goal to be a life lived in honor to God.

A year vs five.. When I look back at the last year its easy for me to be self critical and say What have you really accomplished and did you honor God in the process? ‘You didn’t do nearly half of what you wanted to achieve in your work, your family, or your own spiritual growth’  I hear my own self doubt and I’m always reminded of a song by Larry Norman ‘Walking Backwards Down the Stairs’ I always felt so much in common with these lyrics. They aren’t culturally relevant, or inspiring in fact they are quite the opposite. I wish I could say anyone reading this has even heard the song, but I know thats far reaching! I always look back and feel like I have been spiritually stagnant, like I’m facing the right direction in this race (1) but either I’m moving the wrong direction or my pace is that of a scenic walk, instead of a focused intentional race to a finish line. Now lets be clear I’m no runner ‘Run for fun I ask? What kind of fun is that?’ running metaphors have little application to my life. I would rather paint you a picture than run a mile, but whatever analogy I use the point remains, I’m in this for the long ‘run’ and the deceitful lies I tell myself about not making progress are just that.

I have accomplished more this year than in the last 5 combined, in what seems all areas of my life my work, my children’s education, and my walk with God just to name a few! I don’t say that to brag but celebrate a life moving forward. The long game. Not a sprint, a marathon. An artists masterpiece can take years to complete It took Michelangelo 4 years to complete the Sistine Chapel something he would rather have not even started! Though ones pace is slow at times and we may not enjoy the work or circumstance we are in, the goal remains to finish. Though the temptation to give up is there we forge ahead. Not walking backwards like the song suggests but focused on the goal. There is no greater harm than time wasted so we press on. I look forward to the year to come and I pray that I desire more than I can accomplish.

(1) Acts 20:24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
